How are they about gay people there? I’m of Hungarian descent and want to visit but with an uber conservative/autocrat regime in charge I’m not so sure.

Here's my perspective as a Romanian - a place with exactly the same social and political environment as Hungary.

With the exception of Western nations and a very small selection of highly developed and cosmopolitan countries (Taiwan comes to mind as an example), expect the locals to hold very different views on LGBT issues than yours. But if you strike them out of your potential destinations, you're missing out on some of the most beautiful and interesting cultures in the world.

I would say - as long as you don't stand out from the crowd very much (good advice anywhere in Eastern Europe in general, standing out is frowned upon in all things), you'll be extraordinarily safe.

tbh, as a tourist, I haven't noticed any signs of Orban's regime (which I heard of from the news). I've seen rainbow flags here and there, but again, as a tourist, I hardly can make any judgement on such matters
